BGP weather map

By Andree Toonk | June 18, 2007

BGP weather mapFor a few weeks already I have been working on a project which I gave the name “BGP Weather map”. It started after I saw a presentation at the IETF in Prague from a Japanese group of researches. They were working on anycast DNS, and had some nice tools that visualized from which countries the queries originated. I used the same set of open source tools to visualize the use of IP addresses all over the world. Different “show ip bgp” output files are parsed and stored in a MySQL database. Currently there are parsers for Cisco and Avici. This data is analyzed and visualized with some php code. An Ipv4 and IPv6 demo can be found here. I hope to continue working on this in the coming weeks. Things I am thinking about is to add support for AS path analysis, maybe also focused on 2bytes AS numbers. Another thing I’m thinking about is graph visualization. If you have any other ideas, just drop me an email! More information about this project can be found in the project section: http://www.toonk.nl/~andree/bgp.php
