Moving to Vancouver, finally!

By Andree Toonk | June 10, 2007

VancouverI’m happy to announce that I will be moving to Vancouver in September of this year! Last week I told my employer that I will quit my job end of August and yesterday I told my landlord! I am very excited about this and can imagine you might have some questions, so I thought it would be best to treat the rest of this post in an FAQ style fashion.

Why are you leaving?
The main reason: I want to be with my girlfriend! and the fact that I want to experience living and working outside of The Netherlands.
I met Gleyse (my girlfriend) in November 2005 in Vancouver, and since then we are together. Although there’s quite a big distance between us, around 7750 kilometers or 9 time zones, we were able to meet around every three months on average, and had a great time together! Now after more then one and a half year we are going to take this one step further!

Do you currently have a visa?
I have applied for a skilled workers visa, but I’m currently still waiting for that to be approved. That will take approximately one more year. In the mean time I can use my working holiday program visa, which will allow me to stay and work in Canada for one year. However I hope to be able to apply for a work permit also.

Do you already have a job?
No, I do not yet have a job in Vancouver. I am looking for a job right now and if you can help me please let me know. Also see my resume at http://www.toonk.nl/cv.php

When are you leaving?

My plan is to go to Vancouver in the first week of September. I hope to have found a job by then. But if I do not have a job in September I will go there anyway, and continue my search over there.

How do you feel about leaving?
It feels great! I knew for a long time that I wanted to go to Vancouver, but because of circumstances I was not able to go there earlier. Now that things have changed I am looking very much forward to go! It was difficult for me to quite my current job, because I have a great job and a great employer! But this is something I really want to do! One thing is for sure, I will miss all of you!

First of all, nice picture! Vancouver has a very nice skyline!

Now to stick to the subject: Good for you!
I know how much you want this change in your life and therefore I support you for a full 100%. I really respect the choices you have made and the guts you have shown to push through. (No guts no glory :))

No one knows what the future will bring, you have made a well thought through decision and you follow your hart, so I’m sure that in the future you will not feel that this is a wrong decision. People tend to feel sorry about the things they didn’t do when they had the opportunity! You are not making that mistake!

Although I support your decision and I’m really happy for you… I do feel very sad that you are leaving the Netherlands…
We’ll see a lot less of each other and I’ll miss you. (And our drinks and adventures in Europe!)

Anyway, good luck! (Also to Gleyse ;))
If you need anything the next couple of month that I can help you with, just let me know.

    Kind regards,

I expect that I can crash at your place when I’ll be visiting a few months after your arrival! ;)

I have a lot of respect for you that you are moving to your girlfriend in another country. As you say…its small 8000 km’s away….but as we spoke a couple of weeks ago….the world is as big as you want to see it…;)

Anyway, if you need me…i’ll be there too throw you in a jumbojet haha… just a joke. If i can help you with anything….let me know.

ps: roels “ps” counts for me 2? ;)

It’s sure indeed a big step and I think it’s a great opportunity for you to expand. Of course, if you need my help, just call me!

Keep me updated how things are going there, because I’ve been thinking to do the same thing only my trip will take me to Spain. So I’m very curious!

We don’t see each other quite often, but I’m sure that one’s you have left this country I’ll probably will miss you (and the beers…), so I hope to see you soon!

Good luck to you and your girlfriend.

    Kind regards,

We are now in Janaury 2010 wondering how you made out with your immigration to Canada/Vancouver?
Did you find a job? Are you still together with the girlfriend you came here for. Yes I live in Vancouver (30+ years) originally from the Netherlands, long time ago that is.
